The first venture idea that I could offer to the community could be piano lessons. Many people especially children are always very amazed by the sound of music that the piano makes. This service could be offered at a much lower cost than other places that offer piano lessons. The target market for this service would be for children who are interested in learning how to play the piano.
My second venture idea is to open a dessert cafe around David Thompson Secondary School. This dessert cafe could offer a wide selection of desserts such as: ice cream, crepes, bubble tea, cakes, muffins, donuts, etc. This business could offer take out and delivery. This business might require a high start-up cost. The target market for this business would probably be teenagers. The business would most likely be very busy during the lunch hours due to the high number of students who go out for lunch.
I think it is going to be hard for you to start because there are many experienced teachers outside. I think it will be hard for you to attract your customers because of your lack of experiences. However, i think you can always attract customers by lowing your lesson price.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of dessert cafe is pretty good. The main reason is many people are getting sick of the food around school. Adding the dessert cafe around the school can attract alot of students at lunch and afterschool. It can also attract non-students from the neighbourhood.
Piano- you chose a very interesting topic. I have always loved playing piano. I still play piano but I’m not a very good player. I have taken piano lessons for a year but it really didn’t help me that much because it takes awhile to learn even the basics of it and even one class of it was very expensive. I totally agree with you for opening a business for piano lessons with less charge. It would help a lot of families because some parents can not afford a lot of expenses of their kids. Having a cheaper piano lessons place would let the parents fulfill their kid’s dream of playing piano.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I think about a dessert cafe near David Thompson, I don’t think it would be really successful because 1st of all we have cookies available in Wending Machines, Trojan Market, and in the Cafeteria as well. Instead we should have more varieties available in school because I don’t think a lot of people will go out just for one cookie especially if there is a bad weather outside. After all it is Vancouver, We live in.

Piano lessons is a great idea but it depends on how experienced you are. You could easily charge small amounts doing this business and it'll definitely bring in some costumers. The problem is how would you attract new costumers since there's already more experienced teachers out there?
ReplyDeleteDessert cafe idea is great because it'll lure in a lot of teenagers. Not only that, people in the neighbourhood would come try out. Though there's already a lot of small cafe near the area, how would you make your store pop out?

Piano lessons is a great idea. I myself love playing the piano so I wouldn't mind taking lessons as well. The only problem would be where you would teach and with what piano.
ReplyDeleteThe dessert cafe sounds like an interesting idea. I would definitely go to it if someone were to actually open it. You would not need to advertise it much because once a couple students find out about it, they will tell others and so forth. The problem with this idea is that there is competition. There are already a couple of these bubble tea or food stores around David Thompson Secondary School so you might have to lower your prices to get more customers.
I like the idea of offering piano lessons to younger children. How would you advertise to your target market especially since there are people who have taught for decades?
ReplyDeleteThe second idea would be very profitable. The desert cafe would probably not go too well with the Ministry of Health since they want to start a new trend in healthy eating. Are there any kinds of fat-free or low-fat deserts that you could advertise and propose?
I had the same venture idea of starting a small piano business. I agree with your pricing being lowered than other teachers because it will attract customers. With this, parents of younger children can have an introductory to music and if they enjoy it they can continue with you or find an even more experienced teacher. I’d also like to add (which I mentioned in my blog) that teaching piano has a low startup cost because all there is really to buy are music books which we can use to our advantage.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of your dessert café around David Thompson Secondary School. However, it would be pricey because you have to pay for rent and buy all the ingredients. Also, there are already many competitors around the area which could bring down your sales because students are previously loyal to the stores (e.g. Teaworks). You could, however, try to find a place that is not on the main street, away from your competition.
Piano businesses can be pretty profitable, because there is a high demand (interest in music) and a low supply (teachers) in my opinion. Also, any sort of private teaching can be profitable because with 1 on 1 mentorship, quality teaching is to be expected which means a higher price.
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love desserts? However there is alot of competition in the school area, but maybe you could find a specific area of desserts such as frozen desserts which are not as common. Desserts are a type of junk food and junk food, despite the unhealthy drawbacks, is very popular among students in general.
Well piano lessons isn't the easiest. Experience and getting your name out there is key. Easily it's a profitable business but there are many that have been teaching for years already.
ReplyDeleteStarting up a dessert cafe is a good idea. People would love them and it would probably sell itself. However with that said, effort and start-up costs may keep it from it's full potential.

For your first venture idea, the piano lesson, I think if you are able to advertise it around lots of people might be interested since you are offering a cheaper price. As long as you have some kind of certificate or so to show you are capable to teach the students piano then their parents might give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI really like your second idea about the dessert café and I think lots of students will like to try it out since they are probably bored of the food nearby. Even though there is Trojan Market and cafeteria around but they don’t really sell desserts. I think opening up a dessert café will make a profit.

There are actually quite a few of these similar dessert stores around David Thompson already so the competition might be high. Maybe offering a wider variety and better price would attract more customers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think your piano lesson concept would be sucessful because of your lack of experience.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, the dessert cafe idea would be great. There are a few restaurants around David Thompson but they don't have any delicious desserts on their menu. You would be able to make a lot of profit if you were to open a dessert cafe around the school.
I like the first idea because it is very creative. The fresh idea will definitely attract a high consumer base. During school times people don't really have much to do so they most likely will go with this venture idea. Some problems might arise are consumers taste.
ReplyDeleteThe second idea is very appealing because it is fresh, new and smart. Personally I am a student myself and I would love to use my money on this because I find it useful. Some problems that may arise are promotions because it is difficult in school.
The first idea is good, it's already a service or business that is offered. Although it's not creative it is a good job that will help you earn a acceptable amount of cash while having a good time teaching something you enjoy doing.
ReplyDeleteYour second idea sounds very delicious and appealing however i think it doesn't fit in the school board's policy of no junk food and foods that are high in calories. However i really lik this idea !!

Your first venture idea of having piano lessons is great and very beneficial for the kids but it would be hard start since there are many people who do the same thing and have even more experience. I like your second venture idea it’s very similar to one of my venture ideas of selling sweets in the school. I like how you have big variety and give your costumers choices to choose from. However much you spend in the beginning will pay off cause you will benefit.
ReplyDelete- Asma Iftikhar.
You haven’t mentioned that you have any prior experience or knowledge to playing piano, so I wonder how you’ll be able to teach it.. I’m thinking parents would want a legitimate teacher teaching their kids if they are serious about playing. You might want to consider your idea if you yourself only play piano for fun and not professionally.
ReplyDeleteWith your second venture idea of a dessert café, I was just wondering where you’d stock and store your treats? Especially with ice cream because it does melt and can’t be put away in lockers the way other goods can.
Overall, I think you have potential ideas Shelly, but you might want to look into how you’re actually going to carry them out with your goals and current circumstances. Good luck with your venture! :)
I don’t really like the first idea because there are a lot of experienced piano teachers out there. Parents would probably hire someone based on their experience and not the money. It would get your customers thinking. For example, why is it so cheap? Is it because they aren’t AS experienced? Etc. I think this idea will only attract their close family or friends, who know how well they teach.
ReplyDeleteI really like your second idea. It would be awesome, especially during the summer. Everyone would want to cool down by eating cold dessert. Maybe you can provide this service during the summer and during the winter, you can sell hot chocolates, something that will keep the students warm.

As i read earlier in Ashley's blog, your idea is the same of giving piano lessons. I think it's a wonderful venture idea because it has a huge potential market. Even though there are heavy competitors out there with numerous years of experience, they apply that to their advantage of gaining lots of profit. Piano lessons are very pricey so not all parents can actually afford it for their kids. With you opening a business that provides piano lessons at a very low cost, your guaranteed a heavy flow of customers, resulting in a substantial profit for your business.
ReplyDeleteYour second idea is very appealing, however it doesn't seem to realistic considering your only a high school student. Opening up a dessert caff, needs more than just goodies. It would require you to rent a place, get a business licence and many other formalities to fulfill before you can actually set up your own business place. Henceforth, with such a huge start-up cost, and no solid guarantee of your business doing exceptionally well, you're business just doesn't have a margin for profit. Maybe, if you decide to open up a little dessert stall inside David Thompson, it will eliminate many problems and then maybe you can have some chance of your business earning success.
